I have always wanted to be an entrepreneur. For all the time and energy I spent in bringing other people's dreams to live, I realized I could do just the same the things I actually enjoyed. The only question I had, was: How do I make money off my dreams?
My dream has always been to tell rich, meaningful, entertaining stories. I've always been attracted to film and see it as the most powerful way to tell a story because it combines all the arts. I've always enjoyed films, but I never knew how to make a career out of it in Utah. I also didn't own any equipment required to execute a high caliber vision. Not until I met Mitchell.
Mitchell is a Cinematographer with a background in Skateboard videography. He can capture motion quickly and stylishly. I'm a Storyteller with a background in Producing and Location Scouting. Together, I believed we could create high quality assets at an affordable price.
The only question: How do I get clients?
We looked at every business, magazine, and website for opportunities. Any one who looked like they were established or trying to do something with video, I called them. I talked to the Chamber of Commerce in Pasadena, La Cañada, Glendale, and Montrose asking if anyone could use a video. Every one, but hardly any one bit.
It was really challenging at first.
I have value to offer.
Every one has a camera phone - What can I do that no one else can?
How can I present myself and our services in a way that's worth investing?
Our prospecting efforts were slim. We took to Craigslist, and started working with a wedding photographer and his dog Chelsea. We filmed weddings, we photographed dogs, in the beginning, we did anything to make money relevant to film (except pornography).
Every one starts somewhere.
I cold called businesses and pitched commercial ideas. Business videos. Photo campaigns. Anything, you name it! "Every business has a story to tell, let us tell yours." When people see a likable face and understand the business "why", they're more likely to buy. There was a lot of rejection, but enough important lessons to keeping going and growing. There will be many a no.
All it takes is ONE YES.
When you get that YES,
Give it 1000%. Go above and beyond, and make the person that hired you think:
" Wow. That looks amazing. Thank God! You made my life easier. I could not have done this without you." An excellent experience will give entrepreneurs their best referral source: Word of mouth.
Only after I was baptized, did my financial opportunities increase. Only after my actions were aligned with God’s will, did I find doors of success open, and financial opportunities increase 10x.
I’ve always seen Mormons as financially prosperous, but I didn’t know why? Now, I realize that spiritual and financial wealth go hand in hand. All good things belong to God and God is the administrator of all good.
We went from filming weddings to Mitchell working on Hot Ones and Sneaker Shopping. Every year, I work for one big client, and spend the rest of my time writing and dreaming.
If you have a dream, you can achieve it. I believe that God plants dreams in our soul to achieve, and that fulfilling them is apart of our divine purpose. Our choices = our time, and it's up to us to choose the actions that align with our dreams and desires.
Life is good. God is good.
And with God, all financial dreams are possible.
